Resources in Reading is an exciting team of knowledgeable and dedicated reading professionals. Our mission is to provide high quality, practical, research based resources to teachers, parents, librarians, schools, public libraries, and state educational agencies. Each member of our team is a certified reading specialist, and contributes a wide variety of expertise in instruction, assessment, curriculum, materials, and professional development.

With the advent of No Child Left Behind legislation, the federal government has made a commitment to ensuring that all of America’s children receive a quality education. No Child Left Behind stresses the importance of teachers using instructional methods and materials that have a proven track record. As reported by the National Reading Panel, 2000, scientifically based reading research has found five areas to be crucial to reading development:

  • Phonemic awareness: the ability to hear and identify sounds in spoken words.
  • Phonics: the relationship between the letters of written language and the sounds of spoken language
  • Fluency: the capacity to read text accurately and quickly, with proper phrasing and intonation
  • Vocabulary: the words students must know to communicate effectively
  • Comprehension: the ability to understand and gain meaning from What has been read

The Resources in Reading team is well-versed in scientifically based reading research. Our reading specialists are skilled in providing professional development and consulting services on a wide variety of literacy topics, including, but not limited to, those listed above. We offer pre-prepared workshops, custom designed professional development plans, and specialized consulting services to fit your needs.
